A shop I worked in, they had Haas and Matsuura....this is back when I was still running machines.....this time frame is pre-2000

I was able to do anything on the Matsuura, on the Haas...tight tolerances, fussy dimensions, finish requirements...yes, a Haas did it all...

You're leaving money on the table when it would take 30%+ longer to achieve the same results on the Haas....

That is where money is left on the table, at least in my experience.

It really does depend on the kind of work... IMHO. Having written dozens of ROI works in the last 20 years, not everything always pencils out in the high end machine's favor.

One particular case in point; I have/had a customer that machines an extraordinarily abrasive product. No matter the machine, no matter the prep, no matter the options, the machine needs either a COMPLETE rebuild within between 60 and 65 months, or needs to be replaced in that time-frame. Is that an extreme example? Yes. Is that typical? No.

As always in manufacturing, things need to be analyzed on a case by case basis, and ALL things need to be considered. Just like tooling and workholding. I will say one thing that (as JP alluded to) the higher the quality of stuff, the less you have to think about "variable" related things. That is helpful in the overall process. I still stand on "case by case basis" though.
