The big guy is looking at a quote for 10" diameter 625 inconel parts that have a face o-ring groove that requires an 8 finish.

My first thought was pass on the quote.

Is this even possible without polishing?

I don't think so
Depending on how wide and deep it was even polishing would be a challenge

Or...$1 million dollars

But if it's just one Simichrome polish is My go to.

You are gonna be there for a while so better order Lunch...And Dinner....And Breakfast.

I burned my eyes out doing 8 finishes under a microscope... Medical molds Luer Threads,Sharps and such

Can it be turned? If so then use a Burning tool and call it a day.

Burning tool?  You mean a burnishing tool?

It can be done. We use a .005 or a .010 radius end mill and take a .002" to .005" deep finish cut at about 60 sfm.

Edit: I just realized this is on a lathe. If you have a rigid live tooling on the lathe and enough material behind the groove the finish milling should still work.

What are the dimensions of the groove?

First instinct is RUN!... but I need to know all the details before I expend that many calories running.

lol.  I think that he passed on that one.  It's too expensive of a part to roll the dice on a "maybe we can hit that finish".

I never question the Ronaldo.  I just question whether he made a typo or is talking about something I've never heard of.  :D

Burnishing tool sorry about the typo, but with the wrong tool you could set it on fire and have a burning tool so there is that.    :w00t:

QuoteYou should know by now to not question Ronaldo.
Over the years, he's burnt many tools in many situations

Guilty as charged. Put a nice pocket through a part the other day in a hurry. Luckily it was a scrap part so no harm no foul. I tell every person I give a program to always be cautious when first running any program. No code is 100% until it has been run through the machine. I could have CAV it and everything, but still not 100% until been run and tested on the machine.
