Quote from: meatychips on January 13, 2022, 04:36 AMUnless you're remotely streaming, from say a hotel room, it isn't worth it.  I have a NAS setup at home that serves my house for plex devices.

I was actually considering it more for the extra functionality like transcoding and volume leveling etc.

I wouldn't want to open up a hole in my home network.  :D

I just heard that on the news.

A lot of these streaming services are becoming just as expensive as having cable once you put a package together that you like.

I didn't hear how much the hike was.

Without the subscription it still transcodes as far as I can tell.  From what I remember, and I could be wrong, the transcoding with plex pass is just when accessing remotely not when within your own network.  Volume leveling I never had an issue with as most of my TVs have it built in.  The theater setup in my basement I use the optical out for audio so the TV is still normalizing the audio signal.

Damn.  This has to be devastating news for Sling TV subscribers.  I almost subscribed last month.

Sling TV & DISH Drops Disney-Owned Channels Including ESPN, Disney Channel, & ABC in Carriage Dispute

QuoteFor the second time in the last twelve months, Disney is in a carriage dispute with a Live TV Streaming Service. Disney confirmed to the The Streamable unable to reach a deal with DISH and Sling TV to retain more than 17 Disney-owned channels, including ESPN, Disney Channel, FX, Nat Geo, and in the case of Dish, ABC affiliates.

In a statement to The Streamable, Disney said:

After months of negotiating in good faith, DISH has declined to reach a fair, market-based agreement with us for continued distribution of our networks. As a result, their DISH and Sling TV subscribers have lost access to our unrivaled portfolio of live sports and news plus kids, family and general entertainment programming from the ABC Owned Television Stations, the ESPN networks, the Disney-branded channels, Freeform, the FX networks, the National Geographic channels and BabyTV.

The rates and terms we are seeking reflect the marketplace and have been the foundation for numerous successful deals with pay TV providers of all types and sizes across the country. We're committed to reaching a fair resolution, and we urge DISH to work with us in order to minimize the disruption to their customers.

Anyone heard of "NewsOn" for streaming local news?

I've been using haystack occasionally and don't care for it much.  I'm wondering if this is any better.

I use YouTube TV...I get a $10/month, thru Tmobile discount, so it's $54.99

As a Tmobile customer I also get

Free year of Paramount+
Free Year of Apple TV

I also had a $10 discount on Philo which made it $10/month but we didn't watch really anything on there, so I killed that...

I am debated killing Disney+ at this time too..

I dropped Netflix months ago....

The nice thing about streaming is you can easily turn things on/off...you don't get that option with cable....

I'm trying to find something that is free, or as close to free as possible, for streaming local news.  That's pretty much the only thing that I need local channels for.

We bounce between netflix, paramount +, hbo, and discovery + usually only keeping one at a time for a couple of months at a time.  It's been perfect.

I have a media center for everything else.

yes.. I got a free month deal of Paramount+ and watched 1883 I did not renew when the month was up

no I've got 2 months at $1.99/month and I did that for 1923..I haven't seen anything else on Paramount+
I want to watch so I'll let it go when 1923 is over

I'm thinking of dropping my cable TV and switching to a FuboTV subscription.
It's cheaper than my current cable TV package, it gives me all of the channels I am looking for, and I can stream it on my Firestick.

However, I will be keeping my cable internet service because 5G or fiber optic internet service are not available where I live.

The difference in price between my current cable TV and FuboTV also allows me to bump up to the next tier of internet speed (increase from 100 to 250 mbps), and still save a few dollars per month.

Win / Win!!!
