I've been bothered by this for too long and it needs end here.
Why have G81 when G82 does exactly the same thing and more?

TIA ;D

mayday

best I can say maybe I'm wrong
back in the stone age G81 was the only drill cycle written besides pulling down on the spindle handle

Because they are different cycles. Sometimes you just want the straight stuff with no frills.

And if you omit the P from G82 you get just that.

Or... post out G81 and don't omit anything.

neurosis

They probably created a G81 and someone said "fuck - this doesn't work for shit for c-sinking.  G82 it is".

Does G82 without the P work?
FJB

crazy^millman

G81 will not allow for a Dwell and G82 will allow for a dwell on most machines.

CNCAppsJames

BITD, machine memory was a precious resource. EVERY character mattered. Even spaces took up memory.

Today that really isn't the case so from the comfort of our 1GB+ program storage spaces we ask ourselves why something is.

Well, in a nutshell, G81 exists today because backwards compatibility of canned cycles matter.

I have no memory of that
extra paper tape and holes, oops wait those where to 2 axis machines. G81,G82 was all by hand, sometimes both hands

Incogneeto

I use G82 whenever I countersink with my Makita Hand drill. ;D

Yeah, I worked in a shop that had Kitamura Drilling and Tapping Centers with 6M controls... I think we had 16k memory..Anyway, after posting and editing code, we had to remove the spaces in the program before sending in order to fit. Oddly, onceninnthe control, they would regain the spaces but it would not consume memory for doing so. Perhaps just a display thing.
