Quote from: Dan_AKA_ROY23 on April 04, 2022, 02:13 PMTalent more evenly spread out in today's game than back then. In today's game, Kareem and Bill Walton would be one and done's (one year then NBA draft). Those two were dominant players in college. Gonzaga has very good players, but other schools like Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, also loaded to the gills. And there's real talent in the smaller schools, evidenced by the high draft picks.

Wooden was a great coach. No argument there. But you can't compare Gonzaga with Wooden's UCLA teams.
What I was getting at is without a great coach the best college players won't get far on their own. All pro teams have great players but the best teams have great coaches.

Apples to oranges when comparing the NCAA of Wooden's day to today.
It's a whole different animal.

Like Dan said, the incoming talent is more evenly dispersed today, and the very best players don't stay long.

Yes, Coach Wooden accomplished a great deal and is certainly among the greatest of all time.

GOAT opinions are just that.

For longevity, and the SHEER NUMBER OF YOUNG MEN IMPACTED BY HIM over 4 decades, I'm still with Coach K as #1.

Oh and btw...
Congrats to Kansas for a well-deserved National Championship.

I thought they were the team to beat from day one, and they proved it last night.
