Hey all,
I was just talking to one of our Designers here at work, and he is trying to figure out how to open some old legacy *.ge3 mold design files we had backed up on our network from way back in the day.

I knew I probably couldn't open them with MC2022, but I gave it a shot anyway.

My question is, how far back would I need to go in Mastercam versions to be able to open those files and convert them to step, parasolid, or IGES?

I have installation CD's all the way back to MCX, but I'm not sure if that would work if I installed the older version on my current workstation with my current sim.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Yikes, that brings back memories. I would think maybe Mastercam V9, or Version X?

I just looked at X9 which is the earliest version I have, and it will only open *.mc* files as the earliest.

Thanks.
Yeah, those files are moldy oldies!
I actually have X9 still installed on my current workstation, but I found that didn't work either.

Our design guy is going to follow up with our Mastercam / SolidWorks reseller in the meantime to see if they can help with converting the old files.

I'm pretty sure Version X reads GE3 files. I recall having X Draft many years ago, that I used to convert some ge3 files for a customer.

OK thanks.
I dusted off an old XP laptop we used to use for our Faro Gage, but don't use anymore.

I remembered we also used it as a backup for Mastercam, and I was surprised when it fired right up.
X3 was still installed, so I popped in my USB sim and that fired right up as well.
I still couldn't open the ge3 files, but it was nice to know it still works.

I actually have an installation CD for version X, so I am going to try installing that today.

If you dont have any success, let me know. I definitely a "ge3 capable" notebook in my office, so I can update the files for you if you want.

Thanks, I really appreciate it.
I'm not sure how many files our Designer is looking to convert, but there were a crapton of them in the directory he showed me.  I still haven't heard from him whether our reseller would be able to help.  If that doesn't work out, and if it's only a couple of files, I will let you know.

Well, I'm pretty sure the software has the ability to convert a directory.

I had to update a bunch of ge3 files for a customer a few years ago. From memory, it was something like over 600 files.
