Guess we'll see how serious he is. There's an entire cabal of jackals that promised to leave when Trump was elected.

Funny thing... other countries have actual standards.

Quote from: MIL-TFP-41 on June 24, 2022, 09:51 AMA bill is how it should of been done in the first place, IMO.

Absolutely correct.

Nobody should be gloating over the fact that it took the SCOTUS 50 years to undo something that wasn't their job to do in the first place.
If Congress had gotten off its collective ass back in the 70's and actually done their job, legislating, SCOTUS would never have had the opportunity to legislate from the bench.

If Congress wanted a federal law on abortion, a federal abortion bill should have been presented in the House and voted on, yea or nay.
But since the political cowards back then wouldn't do that, and knowing full well it wouldn't have passed, they punted it to the courts to draft an opinion that became pseudo-law at best.
Worse yet, they twisted and tortured the language of the Constitution to create a "RIGHT" out of thin air where no such right is there in the first place.

So here we are 50 years later and the Court has corrected its past mistake, and CORRECTLY ruled that individual states should decide whether abortion should be legal.
We are also back to Congress having the ball in their court, and once again expecting them to do their job.

Don't hold your breath, because the political cowardice now is probably far worse than it was back in the 1970's.

A bill, maybe, an Amendment is probably the best way to go..

The right of women to vote was not laid out in the Constitution, after all they went through, it was recognized in the 19th Amendment...

Slavery, though Lincoln did issue the Emancipation Proclaimation, it was only valid while at war....thus the 13th Amendment was added in 1865.

Here is another case, undefined in the Constitution, which really has been the problem all along, that should be codified in an Amendment.

The Legislatures of the States and of the Federal government have abdicated their roles and left things that should be decided and writ in law, to the courts.  Activist courts have long been an issue....we should have a far more active legislature and no activism from the courts if  we're going to do this right.

and just to be 100% clear....yes, I support the SCOTUS ruling and yes, I support adding an amendment to the Constituion recognizing the aforementionded right.

It needs to be done Constitutionally, the right way.

I can see that the new war cry from the left is "impeach SC justices" based on misleading statements made during their confirmations.  Good luck with that.
I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

I am skeptical about SC impeachments happening but I could see an honest discussion over term limits for the justices. Wait a minute, what am I talking about...Honest discussion?

As I said to people over the weekend, there isn't a court nominee that would hint one way or another which way they would rule in a case....any nominee that would, even privately, should be automatically disqualified.

Agree 100%

However, a bill can be passed by a simple majority, whereas an amendment needs a 2/3 majority in Congress AND a 3/4 majority of the States.

Yes, an amendment to the Constitution is absolutely the right way to do it, but I think the liberals know they would never be able to get it done that way, which is why they have never tried.  Instead they punted to the courts. It's even highly doubtful they could pass a federal abortion bill with a simple majority, but they haven't even tried that either...yet.  Congress has completely abdicated its authority on this issue, so now it's time for them to step up and do SOMETHING, whether it be a bill or an amendment.

But as I mentioned earlier, political cowardice has always been the issue behind the issue, so good luck.

One thing it seems to me...Republicans need to tread very carefully here, some already have thrown all caution to the wind...to me, they look to be overplaying their hand in a BIG way...that will spell trouble for them.

This is one of those wedge issues that even many in middle support, at least to some level...

It did occur to me that Roe is only overturned for poor women. Those with means will always have access to a safe provider.

One issue that is not discussed much is making oral contraceptives over the counter rather than by prescription.
That is the case in Europe and the rate of unintended pregnancy is much lower than the US
The republicans have tried several times to make contraceptives OTC, but the Dem special interest groups, the AMA and Planned Parenthood have always stymied these efforts.
Being in control of both contraceptives and oral and surgical abortions means big $$$ for the AMA and PP
