My local range doesn't go to 40 yards (indoor) but maybe I can use a half or quarter size target.

Yeah, scaling down the target on an indoor range should work for simulating the actual 40 yard range.

I haven't tried it yet, but I am curious to see if I could do it.

I would say at first thought that I am fairly confident I could score the 8/10 hits @ 40 yards with my Springfield XDM, but not sure about the 15 seconds or less part. 

Add the adrenaline factor and it makes Eli's successful engagement all the more impressive.
