The ratio if programming engineers to electrical engineers coming out of colleges is about 9 to 1
I suspect there is a similar trend in mechanical engineering.

We have no shortage of Mechanical Engineers, but are they even training manual machinists anymore?

We have one honest-to-God Toolmaker here, and he is getting ready to retire soon.
He has more than enough of a workload to keep him busy every day, but nobody seems concerned about what will happen when he leaves.

The only other people in the whole facility who can run manual machines are myself and one other guy who both work in the CNC department.

AFAIK they are just going to let this guy walk out the door, and not worry about replacing him until they have to.
My company may need to pay a signing bonus to get a manual machinist.

Is that domestic colleges? India puts out EE's in huge numbers. There is a lot of grumblings on a few of the EE/controls engineer groups I participate in that because an EE degree is just advanced math it is easy for India to churn out EE's and they are willing to come here and work for lower wages.

yep funny how business works these days (doesnt).
our plant up north had there only setup guy leave, never filled the position just had there programmer do it. surprise  there only programmer left 2 months later. so the answer was have me commute an extra hour and fill those two positions  its just temporary they say... 2 months later had to put me foot down and say no dice. machines sat for a month till they got a programmer in, still no real setup person. its a mess.

The best paid engineers here are the stress engineers but that's an intensely mathematic discipline. They are also looking for people with a DoD clearance, though it's not required. Composite experience would also be a plus.

They let people work from home during the pandemic; it didn't work out for me, I needed to be close to the machine. They are trying to get people to respond to a survey about working remote. I expect it will result in some form or other of working remotely.

I worked with a Ph.D EE. He said the same; it's a math degree where he specialized in signal processing (think jpeg compression).
