I think it was a lover's quarrel that got badly out of hand
Pelosi and company are trying to bury the truth and wring some political points out it.
As I said earlier, they truth is the first casualty in a scandal like this and the actual truth

The most damning or strange evidence I've seen/heard so far was the phone call. 

On one hand he tells dispatch that there is a man in the house and he doesn't know who he is, but then he tells them his name and that he's a friend.  That does make it sound a little suspicious.
