Yes.. I keep the mail box key and the key to the back gate in the silverware drawer in the kitchen.
When I get out the mail box key or gate key Samson knew he was going for a walk or
a tour of "guard duty" while I put out the trash barrels.
No matter where he was in the house, if I opened the drawer and touched one of those keys, he was there in a second flat
If I opened the draw to get out a fork or something ,,, nothing.. he knew it was a fork and not a key.
I never figured out how he did that. I tried to trick him for 2 years and never did, not even once.
Sunday evening is take out the trash time. I got the key out last night and no Samson. Damn that sucks :-(

It's amazing how sensitive their hearing is....but it still seems like magic!

Sorry to hear about Samson.  It's always tough when losing a pet, they are with us way too short but have such a large impact on our lives.  I still think about my dog Tater who we lost over 5 years ago, I just recently got another dog and already I am dreading the short time she will be apart of our life.

I would love to have a dog or cat.

But unlike most of you its just me here.

And I can't get past the point of leaving them alone for 9 hours a day.

That to me borders on cruel.

Just to be clear I could do that to a woman. ;D

I like it when they are Needy. ;)

I would agree with a dog.  Not quite as much so with a cat.  Cats are pretty independent. I can leave enough food and water down and go on a trip for two or three days and the cat does just fine. He almost looks irritated that I came home.  Until the food runs out.  :D

I had a cat for my son. I was gone 12 hours a day .I would come home and the freakin cat would try to sit on my lap on the toilet he was so starved for attention. Nah I couldn't do that to an animal. but my ex requested him as part of the divorce so I gave him to her for my son and she dropped him straight at the shelter he was euthanized. she told my son he was adopted in Indianapolis. >:(  I was only three days late in finding him. She was smart enough to take him to the next county.

She spends the week with her daughter in Seattle so she doesn't have to deal with the commute in to the city.

I don't think she likes the cat as much as I do.  :D

Neurosis is right-cats are pretty independent! Having said that, they are also quite social, and do like hanging out with "their people." One of our kitties likes to herd us into bed when she thinks it's time to turn in for the night. She'll start hanging around us, and then will make her move into the hallway leading to the bedroom, stopping to look over her shoulder to see if we're smart enough to get the hint!

Another one likes to hang out about 4 doors up the street and will come running after me when I turn down our street on my bike coming home from the shop-it's really charming! And they *all* know the sounds of our cars, too. And they're keenly aware of the sound of the fridge door opening, and the rustling sound made by a bag of deli meat being opened...LOL.

Luckily my wife is a stay at home mom, so the inside dog is taken care of.  Unfortunately for my wife the dog is nearing 70 lbs and is a bit too much to handle when it comes to getting her in the car to go to the vet or groomers, which means I either have to take time off to help with those things or try and schedule them on the weekends when I am off.  She is only 5 months old so it will get worse as time goes on, hopefully she will be more comfortable soon and just jump up in the vehicles instead of having to be picked up and put in.

We have a 4 year old mini Aussie and a 2 year old black cat. We got the cat when he was 8 or 9 weeks old so he has been raised with the dog. I swear sometimes he is more dog than cat. When we get home and he is around he will trot over to greet us. Flop down and roll onto his back so we can scratch his belly. When my daughter walks the dog he will run after them then trot along about 10 feet back. Funniest thing.

I have 2 cats. They are at least 15 years old. So old, in fact, that I forgot when we got them. When I get home my black Manx cat yells at me. He and my grey and white cat (their names were lost in the annals of time long ago) demand that I leave a little trickle of water running in the bathtub. They rarely drink out of a bowl. If I haven't forgotten that he yells at me to sit down so he can immediately jump on my lap and lay down. The other guy is not so vocal but as soon as I sit down in my recliner, he hops up on the armchair. Then they start to cuddle which, to them, means head butt their human with great force.

There was always something a little off about the black cat. One time, he was relaxing under this antique sewing machine. Our Doberman had gotten on his belly, scooted on his belly far enough to get his front paws around the cat and was backing out, pulling the cat with him. I'm not sure what the Doberman had in mind but the cat was just chillin' going along for the ride.
