When judging younger people today vs. a generation ago - look at the % income that is spent on housing & transportation specifically.

Quote from: crazy^millman on February 17, 2023, 07:52 AMYeah to this day that is the case with me also. I am driving a 2014 used vehicle with over 100k miles on it. I haven't bought new since 2008 and don't plan to ever do it again. When you drive any vehicle off the lot you lose 30% and can pick up low mileage vehicles for a great price with warranty.

I got you beat! 2010 with 150k -  Rav4 because my wife doesn't want to drive anything bigger than that. Her rules, I just live here. She loves this car - and as much as I'd like a brand new Tacoma, it's a lot more fun seeing her comfortable and happy.

I just lost a younger engineer here to a wild paying job offer - he felt bad but for the money, he'ed be crazy not to take it.(Albeit a lot of travel) He's 30 and paying $1k a month to live with roomates. Pretty normal.
Yet he also insisted on having a brand new 4-runner at $600/mo. Peoples' choices.

Yeah, I *totally* get this! I'm the proud (third-hand!) owner of a 32-year-old Toyota pickup with only 165K on it! Jeez, I've got a machine shop fer chrissakes-do you think I need any more depreciating assets in my life?!? (Unless I can use them to make money, that is....).

I'm fortunate to live close to the shop, so I don't really have to drive much, anyway. Besides that, I need to exercise to (try to) preserve what's left of my sanity, so I try to ride the bike unless the weather's lousy!

Too few people want to admit that.

$1,500 iPhone here, $600 car payment there, $200 cable bill here (or $80 for internet, $25 NetFlix, $25 Hulu, $59 Amazon Prime, etc...), etc... it all adds up and we all make choices.

Yeah, it's really amazing how much "feature creep" there is in "modern life."

"Oh, it's just $5.00/mo. Yeah times the 25 other things that are "just $5.00/mo.". Adds up to REAL money, REAL quick.

When the US Constitution and Webster's 1st Edition Dictionary are considered the "shittiest of fringes", the republic is officially on palliative care with no hope for the future.
