It very hard to get into medical school. But once you're in, it's very hard to get kicked out.

But then you have to apply for a residency in your chosen field and get 'matched' to a hospital with a residency in that specialty. You rank your choices of residencies, the residency program ranks their picks of student. There is a software program that then 'matches' everyone up.

If you don't get matched, you're kinda fucked. You can reapply for the next match cycle, but a fair amount drop out. They still have a medical degree and can work in research, for insurance companies, medical sale, etc. But they don't become doctors.

Too bad that same system doesn't apply to other professionss, like Mechanical Engineering for example...

I quite often get questions from engineers but usually after their design(s) doesn't work.
