Quote from: neurosis on March 15, 2023, 08:42 AMNow I'm starting to wonder what "a lot of booze" is considered to be.

According to the doctor, it's 2 beers a day for an average size man. Does that mean if you don't drink all week, you can have 14 on Saturday?

I had a brother in-law that averaged at least 30 beers a day. One day his wife got him thrown into a rehabilitation clinic for a month. After the month was over a person from the clinic called and told her that he was not addicted to alcohol and had no issues during the month,  "He just liked to drink."

and holding down a job.

Reminds me of a movie I saw a long time ago about the legendary actor W.C. Fields.
(Just thought of the name... 'W.C. Fields and Me'...Rod Steiger played the lead.)

Anyway he was a famously heavy drinker, and later in his career his health began to deteriorate.
In one scene in the movie he is talking to his doctor:

The doc says, "Your daughter told me that you have been drinking a fifth of gin every day for the last 20 years, but I find that hard to believe."

"She's lying", says Fields, "It was TWO fifths..."

Some people can apparently do it and remain functional for decades, but I think they are few and far between.

Quote from: neurosis on March 15, 2023, 08:51 AMJust a little update on my BP.

After a week and a half of eating nothing but bananas and apples for lunch and then salads with some kind of protein on them for dinner, by BP has gone from a consistent 180 / 95 or higher (some times a little lower, spiked to 200/98 at one point) I've been getting between 130/85 to 140/90 consistently throughout the day for the last 4 days.

Not great, but better.

I am going to the doc in a couple weeks to see about getting on some BP meds as well. The numbers you listed (140/90) is where I normally am. If I eat clean and don't drink they will come down some. I believe mine is hereditary as my father has been on bp meds since he was in his 20's. I think it's time I start doing the responsible thing and start to try and take better care of myself for mine, and my family's sake. You are not alone in this situation, as you have read in this thread. It sucks, I don't want to be on a pill, but the other option is a premature exit from this life. I guess, I can take a pill.

I never wanted to take a pill either.  I had high cholesterol for years and always told the doc I'd work on it.  That was always short lived. I had a heart attack a month after turning 47.

Alcoholism is no joke. I can remember when I was in the first grade how my father would fill a flask with booze every day before going to work. He taught printing trades, and this was in his late twenties. He died at 60. My older sister got what is called wet brain and suffered permanent brain damage as a result. It used to break my heart to talk to her on the phone. She has actually improved somewhat but still isn't nearly the person that she used to be.

I didn't drink for decades but I took to wine in my 40's. I now drink about 3 glasses a day. I really don't like getting drunk.

I lost my first brother to gin at 59 years old. He had a well developed gin blossom. He went to bed drunk and never woke up.

Quote from: neurosis on March 06, 2023, 06:08 AMI think that I've officially entered that old man with high blood pressure stage of my life.

I've been getting some higher than usual readings for the last several years but it's always been in the yellow.  I took a reading this weekend and I was getting 176/94  Kinda scared the shit out of me.  I bought a second home monitor to make sure the monitor wasn't faulty and sure enough, the second said the same thing.

Time for a trip to the Dr's office.  Speaking of shitty insurance premiums.

Stopped reading Smit's shit....your blood pressure will go down!!!!!! ;D
