some of the journalists on Substack say that they are making more money there than they were at places like the NYT or WP. And they have the freedom to be more independent, so I've started to pay more attention to those journalists.

One of our local fox affiliates had a mass exodus of reporters because the "management" was trying to steer narratives and request powder puff interviews with local politicians. They were worried that the local left would abandon fox for a more left friendly station.  Within a year, most of the reporters left and were replaced with yes men (and women).

Some of them went independent and I think some ended up at newsnation?

You are masochistic enough to do a deep dive on the career of a journalist. You find out that the only ones that are able to make a living with the pittence wages that wp and ny slimes pay, you'll discover a major problem. Only trust fund children can actually sustain it.
