Growing up in the 80's with NASCAR's "Dick Trickle coming down the back stretch" and NFL's Dick Butt kiss was mad.

Elmer Fudd

Gotta be tough with a name like Dick Butt kiss. RIP

Put fear in the eyes of every opponent. A vicious hitter. Great field vision. A master at reading offenses, anticipating plays before they developed. One of the all time great linebackers. RIP

Agreed.

Like many NFL legends, he was a fierce competitor on the field, and a genuinely nice guy off the field.

He will be missed.

I always remembered that story Frank Gifford used to tell on Monday Night Football once in a while.

He played his whole career for the Giants, and long before the Meadowlands they played at the old Polo Grounds.
That was a notoriously muddy and sloppy place to play, with mud puddles on the field sometimes several inches deep.

Gifford was at the end of his career, and this new kid Dick Butkus was taking the league by storm.
Frank tells about one play where Butkus tackled him right in the middle of this huge mud puddle on the field, and he swore Butkus was intentionally holding his head under the water until the refs yanked the pile of bodies off him one by one.

They always used the term 'Gladiator Mentality' to describe his style of play, and Gifford swore up and down that he almost drowned him that day!
