My 9 year old granddaughter just got her red belt with 1 stripe in Taekwondo. She gets another stripe on her red belt and then she goes for her black belt. She started when she was almost 6. Her 18 year old brother is a 2nd degree black belt.

I was into martial arts from middle school till out of high school for a couple of years. it's the best conditioning I had ever had and I was in the best shape I ever was.

That's amazing what your granddaughter is doing and I hope her instructor is training her mentally as well as physically.

When I would go to the competitions, if you wanted to see the greatest action you went and watched the brown belts spare. if they won 1st place sparring they advanced to their black belts. it was intense sometimes.

That is awesome stuff Mike. One of my biggest regrets is not starting BJJ/MMA training until I was 45 years old. I always wanted to do some kind of Martial arts training but never was serious or lacked the person confidence to try it.

Yeah, I studied TKD in my late teens and twenties. I was good at sparring but I didn't have enough discipline to do the forms so I didn't progress much. Plus I kept getting hurt.

When my grandson first started, his school was really one of those black belt factories. He had a black belt in a year. But the school they go to now, where Lilyea, my granddaughter, has always gone. seems pretty legit. The master there is a 7th degree black belt and also Korean, so I think that gives him some credibility. He also required Brody to demonstrate that he was a legitimate black belt. Brody is an assistant instructor now. It has been very positive for both of the kids.

My 11 year-old granddaughter is interested in starting martial arts this year.
The physical and mental aspects of that type of training is good for a kid IMO, and it will teach them much more than just self-defense.

We have a Red Dragon Karate USA studio in town where I know quite a few people who have sent their kids.
They have been there for more than a decade, and the main instructor has a great reputation in the community.

My daughter and son-in-law have been looking into it, and have not heard anything that gives them cause for doubt.

I think she will be starting in the next beginners class in January.
