How do you explain to a 5 year old why her Jewish friends don't celebrate Christmas while you're getting ready for a bat mitzvah for one of them?

You tell them they obviously need more time in the religious smack downs on the Mastercam forums.

I would just say, we believe Jesus is God and because of that we celebrate his birthday. But some people don't believe that and they don't celebrate his birthday.

I always tried to approach things from a child's level of comprehension.

I would tell them that not everyone has the same beliefs and that they do have celebrations but they are different.

I would avoid the direct religious connection unless asked directly. Then I would brush with very large strokes.

Simply too young to grasp what many adults still struggle to deal with...

Like John, I'd say many people have different important hoidays, and that's OK 

Only if pressed, would I explain in general terms that Jews do not believe that Jesus was The Messiah, and because of that, they do not celebrate his birth. They have a different celebration that is called Hannakkah that takes place over several days "around" the same time as Christmas.

Kids are incredibility receptive. Much more than some adults.

Just tell them different people have different beliefs.
