I don't even want to tell you how much time I've spent watching this guys video's since you posted this one. lol.

I've been setting up a docker container on my NAS to run a Plex server and the amount of information this guy has on docker is nuts.

i've got a Proxmox machine on my network i'm planning on doing plex and Nextcloud install. Might dabble with some docker containers too, but the install looked a bit involved.

If you're running proxmox you don't really need to worry about docker? Unless you just want to play around with it?

oh, yeah maybe that it. I havn't gone through full usage of either so the details are foggy.
Might be a but of a rube goldberg exercise since a can use the new router as a VPN server with USB attached storage. Not sure how the Plex media server would fit into the puzzle.

I've been building a media center for about 7 years now. It's like my own personal Netflix with everything I like in it.

The only reason I'm running it in a docker container is that I want it isolated from the rest of my NAS. I can give it access to specific folders and since it's isolated, it can't see anything else outside of those.

The NAS has a native (I believe) Plex install, I just feel better having it contained.

What OS are you running?
I'm currently building a NAS and going to load TrueNAS Scale.
The fun part is the drives....... :hairpull:

I bought an Asustor NAS running ADM (their own o/s)

I had a Synology but after 7 years, it started crapping out.

I don't have the ambition to build my own NAS.  It's not that it's too difficult. I've been a FreeBSD guy since the early 2000's so I can usually navigate my way through quite a bit. I've built a home router using FreeBSD and PF firewall. For the NAS, I just want something that works.

If I have to rebuild again in the future I'll probably get a cheapo NAS to set up the raid array and a minipc to run Plex.  That's probably the smartest, easiest, and cheapest way to get a decent setup. Especially if you need hardware transcoding.

lol. I only had to edit this 3 times.  My proof reading skills need some work.  :D

No.  I've never used PFsense.

FreeBSD PF firewall is a ported version of OpenBSD's PF

Have you figured out how your going to house and connect the drives?

This could be good info for me later.  :D

And have you played around with unraid at all?

Currently I have 5 drives total, two 1tb and two 8tb NAS drives, also a 1tb SSD for the OS.
1tb drives will be for video surveillance and 8tb drives for video and audio files accessing thru Home Assistant.
Stuffing them into an older Media Center PC case that can hold 6 drives.
Replacing the Mobo, the original one just barely makes the miniumum requirments for TrueNas Scale.
Setting up the drives with ZFS
I have not played with Unraid.

After watching some of that dudes videos I bought a Beelink EQ12 to play around with. I'm going to install proxmox and *attempt* to set up pfsense in a vm and try to get that to work as a router. I'll set up an LTS version of Ubuntu and try to use that as a plex server.  Not sure how it will play together having the router running in the VM.

This is just a toy of course.  For now anyway.
