The way it looks to me is that the redirection could be from dropping anchor and creating a pivot point.
Has anyone heard anything about the anchor being dropped at all?

The hard turn was from the mass of the propeller changing direction into reverse. It happens on all single screw boats when the rotation of the prop switches quickly.

And I know I heard the pilot/captain called for the anchor to be dropped, however I believe it was too late to do anything, or if it was even dropped by the time they hit. I have seen pictures of the anchor chain hanging in the water, and it looks almost vertical.

Yeah the day it happened they had a guy on Fox News who was a Captain of one of those cargo ships with more than 35 years experience.  As he watched the video, he said flat out that dropping the anchor at the speed they were going would not slow it down one bit.  He also said losing power on those things is quite common, and that he himself had a few close calls in his career.  He said those companies that own most of those ships spend the least amount of money possible on maintenance, just enough to keep them afloat, and that many of them are downright dangerous.

Remember back when there was a train derailing every couple weeks. Now it's ships running into bridges. Weird that it was trains first and now ships/barges and they were not mixed. That's the kind of thing that makes your tinfoil hat tingle.
