I've been really unhappy with the tone I'm getting on my guitar. I'm playing a Gibson SG thru a Fender tube amp so I should be able to get it to sound great. I finally took the guitar in to have a professional setup done. In the mean time I've been playing my PRS and it sounded like crap.

Silly me. The problem is me. I've been playing at a too low volume.  I turned the amp up a little louder last night and tweaked the EQ a bit and it sounded great. Well as great as a crappy player like me can sound. And it wasn't even cranked. Apparently, you have to have a certain amount of volume to allow the sound to "bloom" and let all of the frequencies of the tone come through.
It's probably too loud for an apartment and it was a little loud standing directly in front of it but what a difference. The amp has a volume and master control and I could get just the right amount of break up without a pedal.
Anyway it was a great relief.

LOL

I had a similar experience with our sound board at church.
Another guy and I run sound every other week.
Last week I thought everything was way too loud, so I started backing everything down.

Turns out everything was fine.
The other guy apparently just turned up the volume to the headphones...

Yep, I felt like a real dumbass.    :wallbash:

I run sound at my church too. I always watch the meters or whatever you call them. The lights that move in relation to the volume. I let them go up into the yellow just a little.

Yes, that's what we do too.
Normally we use the PFL button on each channel, and use the gain knob to zero the meter, then adjust with the slider as needed.
My eyes were telling me the levels were good, but since the other guy bumped up the volume to the headphones my brain was telling me everything was too loud.  :w00t:

Lesson learned!
