 Challenger 3 main battle tank

It's new 120mm main gun has a 5000 meter range (5468 yards)
 and a muzzle velocity of 1780 meters/sec. (5840 feet/sec)
That's  crazy

I'll bet the barrel life really sucks LOL

I wonder what MOA that gun is rated at??
A 1 MOA would be a 50 yard group at 5000 meters.. making hits on a tank sized object highly improbable
and not worth the expense of building a gun that can shoot that far.

I am supposing that like any firearm, you can shoot a sub MOA grouping if you know what you're doing and have removed or negated some of the other variables that come into play.

When I was in a tank battalion in the USMC, the expected marksmanship requirements
for a tank gunner were 80% first shot hit probability on a moving tank sized target at 1500 meters.
The tanks were 70's vintage M60A1's, shooting a rifled 105mm cannon using analog fire control systems.

50 years later they are shooting smooth bore 120mm sabots out to 5000 meters at velocities slightly over
1 mile/second. It boggles my brain just thinking about it.

I worked on this for a while, it's been scrapped now though.
