Everyone is expendable. The minute you think you are not is when you'll suddenly be on the street wondering what happened.

SO many people do not get this. Someone may be hard/impossible to replace, but EVERYONE is expendable.

Losing this job would be a massive blow, no doubt. But, my coworker is a young guy under thirty with a wife and three kids. He's a sharp guy with good programming skills. He gave up art school when his girlfriend got pregnant and started running a machine. He went to community college and learned Mastercam. He worked his way through several shops, staying a year or two at each one. He's been here 5 years now.

If it came down to it, I'm not sure I'm enough of an asshole to let him get walked out instead of me.

That was my dad. He was working for a machine tool dealer as a Service Engineer in SoCal. 2008/2009 hit and the dealer had to let people go. My dad took layoff instead of one of the young guys with a family.

mowen's work is exclusively DOD stuff so he's not going to France.
I suspect his department will be folding into Boeing's DOD endeavors.
It is far too important to just shut it down.

That's what is looks like so far; I'm just not sure how Northrop will feel about Boeing taking over the B-21 work we do here since they, along with Lockheed, were the major competitors for the contract.

It's hard for me to think anything other than the status quo will remain for that... at least in the near term. 

I'm pretty sure the DOD is going to make them swallow that bitter pill because they need 3 primes just to maintain the current inventory not to mention new development and that's all there is to it.  

Personally I don't see any up and comers in the military aircraft development game. SpaceX and Blue Origin have their hands full with their own stuff and it would take not only a Herculean effort, but a group with that kind of capital to boot get that going.
