I was watching a series about Afghanistan that used footage from the soldier's helmet cam. There was a firefight and two guys were changing position. it was daylight and you could actually see bullets passing between them; rather, you could see the path of the bullets passing between the soldiers. Sort of like heat shimmers. I'm sure it wasn't visible to the naked eye but you could see it on video.

Technical term is called Bullet Trace.  but yes it looks like a "heat shimmer i guess"

Thanks! I thought maybe it was a disturbance in the air caused by the bullet being supersonic but couldn't think of a better way to describe it.

I think that photo is of the bullet that went thru his ear.

re bullet trace
When the sun is just right you can see the stream of bullets from an M16 on full auto.

Agreed.
I believe the FIRST shot hit his ear, otherwise he would have ducked sooner if he heard one go by.

Guys who have been in the military long enough can remember the old rifle ranges where you were actually downrange in 'the pits' raising and lowering target frames manually as rounds whizzed over your head.

They make a pretty loud CRACK as they pass by, so again, if the first shot missed, I think Trump would have reacted when he heard the crack.

As for what we used to call 'vapor trail', you also see that very clearly on rifle ranges, especially if you are directly behind the shooter and over the top of the muzzle.
This is how sniper spotters give windage corrections to their shooters.

When I shot in long-range rifle competition, the trick was to turn your spotting scope a tiny bit out of focus so that you could better see the shimmer of the heat waves coming off the ground, just like the heat waves you can see with the naked eye looking at pavement from a distance on a hot day.

We call that 'mirage', and it also helps the shooter and spotter gage the wind speed.

Anyway, if he is positioned correctly, the spotter can see the bullet cut a very clear trail through that mirage the whole way from the muzzle to the target and determine if the shooter needs to correct left or right.

Yes.. the first reaction by anyone on the stage was Trump putting his hand to his ear.
A .223 is faster than the speed of sound by a factor of 2
Trump had a hole in his ear before anyone heard a thing.
Then the sound of the shot arrived and people started reacting.
At 150 yards the bullet arrived about a quarter second before the sound of the shot.

Yep.

And I have mentioned before that Crooks didn't adjust for about a 15 mph crosswind from his right to left, which would result in a 2.5" to 3" drift to the left for a .223 @ 150 yards.

I would bet anything he aimed at Trump's nose and hit his ear instead because of the wind.

He probably aimed at his forehead... but didn't account for bullet drop or wind drift

Yep.
F'kin amateurs... :harhar:

In this case though I'm glad the shitbird didn't know enough to compensate for conditions, otherwise we would be having a completely different conversation.
