Usenet.... oooof. Man that's a trip in the wayback machine. I was a lurker back then. Dial up to Cal Poly Pomona's VAX then out to to the Bulletin Boards.... Just a kid in my mid-20's Until eMastercam came along. There was a massive need for online help and thankfully Dave Thompson (RIP) saw the need and filled it.

So many life long relationships were forged there.

I just remember Tim posting on Usenet under the moniker Saipem or something like that?  I had no idea who he was but  he sure was feisty.

I didn't know who he was until I started posting on EMC.

Usenet was unmoderated so it was a shit show.  lol.

I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

Quote from: Smit on July 29, 2024, 01:10 PMProbably. I expect most of the guys who migrated over from eMastercam are over 40 at least.

Byte, Youtube Bob, maybe you might be younger. But not many.

Oh that's cute, you gave me a nickname! I feel so accomplished.

The Congress was set up so that the population of each state determines the number of representatives.
That gives more populous states more power that less populated states.

The Senate was set up so that each state gets 2 seats each.
This was meant to be a check on the power of more populated states over less populated states.

This was a brilliant setup based on what the founding fathers saw as the causes of political turmoil and repression
in Europe.

Flash forward a few centuries and you have a state like California with 40 million+ residents whining because
Wyoming (pop 560K) has the same power in the Senate as they do.

Another thing they did not foresee is huge metropolitan areas totally dominating the rural parts of states.
This is particularly true on the west coast where the big population centers along the coast run roughshod
over the less populated interior.

They shreik because they are ignorant fools with ZERO understanding of our nation's history.

I think sometimes people forget that at the founding of our nation, a significant part of the population lived a subsistence agrarian life that was almost tribal in nature. They handled much of their business on a handshake. A man's word was his bond. If he wasn't good for it, he was good for the end of a rope.

Quote from: JakeL on July 29, 2024, 12:36 PMYa I've been on eMC for a little over a year. Only been here for a few months. I don't post much in the general discussion forum, more of a lurker around these parts. Seems to me like most of the time very few people agree with you.
You've been here for a while, I was still admin when you joined, it's definetly been more than a year, or maybe a lots happened and it hasn't been that long

I've had 2 other logins at eMC. CNC Apps Guy and Foghorn Leghorn. The first one I burned because Cryler was an ass and I was sick her bullshit. I burned Foghorn Leghorn because Danielle banned me because someone asked the question about online training and I pointed them to like 2 resources.  I mistakenly omitted eMC. I wasn't aware they had online training at the time. So told Danielle to delete my account.

The only reason I came back is because the President of my company personally requested I go back. He said he was hearing complaints from customers that " I wasn't accessible in a format they liked to frequent...". So I obliged. Honestly I'd torch my IG account too if I didn't have about a half-dozen customers that use that medium for support as well.

That said, I'm either member eMC #53 or #58. I signed up within a month or two of it's creation. It was May 2000 IIRC. I'm not sure who has been around the longest.

If I had to guess... my eMC post count is for sure north of 30,000 and possibly north of 40,000. That's with taking a 2-3 year hiatus.

My grandpa that I lived with for 4 years is who you can blame for my deep dives into US History. He was the school historian in high school and college. He loved US History.

When I traveled around the US for two summers with grandma and grandpa we went to so many historical places. It's one thing to read about a place and the battles that were fought there for our Independence... it's something else to walk where they walked.

We spent 3 weeks in DC. Spent a couple days in the National Archives and the Library of Congress. So much amazing stuff. It's why I verbally joust with people about our history. It's important. If we don't know where we came from we sure as hell won't figure out where we're going. Is it a losing battle? Doesn't matter. As long as ai have breath, I will speak about US History.
