Saved some money replacing my own dryer heating element today.

we finally had to replace both of ours in the last couple of years; I think they were about 30 years old but don't know for certain (both were Kenmore that were here when we moved in 23 years ago).

The quality of appliances is definitely more imoprtant to the woman than to me. We all know how that ends up.   

I'm happy if I can pile all of my clothes in to a single load and then dry all of them in a single load.

I know what you mean, but there's something else going on here, too....I'll explain:

Our most recent dishwasher "experiences"...we had a Bosch something-or-other (not a cheapo-or so I thought, but not crazy expensive either) that was just over the 2-year mark when the drain pump went out. We get the service guy out and sure enough, that's what it is. Parts + labor will run ~$400, take about a week and a half to get going again. Its predecessor suffered a similar fate, but after ~10 years of service (I'm OK with 10 years, not OK with 2+ for something that we assumed was a "good" quality appliance). Not knowing any better, we elected to fix this machine (the 10 year veteran), but by the time the parts arrived and the repair happened the interior of the dishwasher started to sprout some mold-yuk. No problem-we'll run it a few times....it'll buff right out! Wrong...you could never really  get it clean again, so we junked it.

Long story short, when the most recent unit failed we just tossed it and got something better. I can't tell if we got a dud, or if Bosch had been kinda trading on their name, or what. We did about as much research as we (i.e.-my wife) could stand and tried to hold our noses while we spent about 2X what we spent just two years earlier.

I may be naive, but I sorta expect appliances to be good for at least 10 years, but I'm getting the idea that this may be a quaint notion these days. As far as I can tell, white goods and the like may be the most highly "value engineered" consumer goods these days. I learned that trying to have a useful conversation with a salesman about this is a fruitless endeavor, too....MTBF is not something anybody wants to discuss, but boy, how 'bout that stainless?
