I like Mike Rowe a lot and have a lot of respect from him, but he never seems to touch on how for decades the money/wages shifted from blue collar to white collar. The more the push for college, the more the money moved from blue to white. In the last few years there has been some shift in wages, but overall the entry level positions to those skilled labor jobs had not kept up with inflation at all. He always talks about six figure skilled workers, and yes those opportunities are out there. However, it's hard to get people interested in going into those jobs when they can't even afford to live while they are learning/training.

Quote from: mowens on August 09, 2024, 08:16 AMNobody talked to me about going to college.

I remember we had a big assembly in the auditorium one time. The oil lamps on the wall smoked a lot so it was hard to see the stage. I was shocked when they came around and took away our clay tablets and sharpened sticks and started to talk about something called a "pencil". They said it was necessary because we were no longer going to be taught cuneiform. Instead, it was going to be something called "cursive". They said it was going to be the future.

Ha. Jokes on them.

You might wanta put a (sarcasm) or Smiley after that.

Jus Sayin. ;D

Further thoughts (brace yourself!):

Something I've noticed from time to time is that many folks struggle with learning on their own, and I've wondered if this might be an unintended consequence of how we're taught in school.

It's one thing to perform well academically, where many parameters are well-controlled, but the real world is messier than that and may require different problem solving skills or creativity.

Thoughts?

Years back we had a very well educated gentleman in the tool room.

He needed to pop a quick hole in a piece of Teflon.

He held the piece in his left hand and the drill in his right.

Drilled a perfect 3/8" hole through the Teflon.

And his Hand. :o

He was Very Creative.  :)

You should have heard his Language Skills. ;D

This right here.  You can thank Henry Ford for this btw.  Create compliant 'workers' to show up and do a job over, and over, and over.  Maybe a hot take, just my 2€

I would consider myself a realist.

Apprenticeships were HARD to come by when I came along in 1992.

Now we have unions for the ironworkers, electricians, plumbers, heavy equipment operators, etc all running commercials on local TV begging for apprentices.

Hardly, I don't believe what is going to happen is unstoppable, just that because of human nature itis most likely inevitable.

You don't see anyone on the right side of the isle talking about this, or even acknowledging it. Start this conversation and you get class envy arguments. Just look at the increase of personal debt over the last several years.

More and more people every year are unable to afford health insurance and have no way to pay their medical bills so you'd almost have to predict that we're headed for a future financial catastrophe some time in the not too distant future.

I remember being able to afford my own apartment at 19 with no room mates and that was with a car payment. I don't know if that's possible anymore?
I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

It's quite simple, and I have said this many times...

Our generation (Boomers) and those previous to us were taught 'how' to think.
Today's kids are taught 'what' to think.

The difference is staggering, and it has far-reaching consequences.

The tribalism and absolutism of modern politics has destroyed us as a society. You stop regurgitating talking points and point out the elephant in the room and you get called negative or "fence sitter".
