I've read that 90% of the plastic in the oceans comes from China and India.
They buy all the recycled plastic US consumers collect, pick out the good stuff and thrown the rest
into the rivers... and it ends up in the ocean.
That sounds simplistic but I am pretty sure no one in the US is legally dumping plastic.
Even if there were people doing it illegally that wouldn't account for the volume of plastic in currently
getting dumped in the oceans.

What happened....prolly 15 years ago now (?), was "us western countries that care about the planet" set all the recycle figures, and promptly set-up the recycling (aka dirty chit) to be sent to Chy-NUh.
They proceeded for many years, to dump large amounts into outgoing tides - something like 90% of the plastic in oceans, came from 4 Chy-Nuh rivers.
This went on for many years, but apparently now has stopped
Meanwhile....all us western countries patted ourselves on our backs, for meeting our recycling targets....

This is correct, partly, much of it no longer comes from China. Much of the "empty" connex boxes returned overseas are actually filled with "recycled" plastic. It's a fraud, and really the only two things that actually get recycled are aluminum and cardboard.

In 2018, China's National Sword policy banned the import of most plastics and other materials that were not up to new, more stringent purity standards. The U.S. then sent its plastic waste to other countries, shipping 68,000 containers to Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand in 2018. When these countries later instituted bans on imported plastic waste, the U.S. diverted its waste to Cambodia, Bangladesh, Ghana, Laos, Ethiopia, Kenya and Senegal — countries with cheap labor and lax environmental rules. The U.S. still ships over 1 million metric tons a year of plastic waste abroad, often to countries already overwhelmed by it. Experts estimate that 20 to 70 percent of plastic intended for recycling overseas is unusable and is ultimately discarded. One study found that the plastic waste exported to Southeast Asia resulted in contaminated water, crop death, respiratory illnesses due to toxic fumes from incineration, and organized crime.

The reason I stopped recycling plastic and just throw it away now.

I'll be 70 in a couple of weeks and I still do pullups daily.
It gets harder all the time though.
Maybe I'll just start wearing a house robe.
Then I will no longer need to pull up my pants.

I made a deal with myself.  When I can't do pull ups anymore I'll stop working out. I'm still doing pretty good. I'm not lifting as much these days.. lol. Unless you count the pull ups  I'm lifting more. 

I have a smith machine in my spare bedroom with an olympic weight set. I've been lifting weights since my early 20's.
