With the electoral college process in America you are not actually voting directly for a presidential candidate. You are voting for electors that have been selected by the primary process of each state to vote for a certain candidate. Most states have legal definition of what happens to those electors if a candidate dies or has to drop out. There were some legal scholars that saying that at least 2 or 3 swing states say that now that their electors are assigned to Biden/Harris, they can't be changed because of their state constitutional law. Some people say this why the party had to accept Kamala when Biden dropped out. I suspect at this point if something were to happen to trump, Vance would be the candidate whether the party or the voters liked it.
