QuoteThroughout history, several firearms have become inexorably linked to a single cartridge. Colt's 1911 will always be associated with the .45 ACP. When you think of lever-actions, you think of the .30-30 Win. And, the AR-15 is forever tethered to the .223 Rem./5.56 NATO.

Of course, that isn't exactly correct, is it? Today, you can get 1911s and lever guns chambered for a variety of cartridges. The same holds true for the AR-15. But, is there a "best cartridge" for what has become known as the modern sporting rifle (MSR)? The answer is complicated.

I built a 350 legend AR pistol last summer for deer hunting knowing I wouldn't be able to find shotgun slugs.  Not to mention something lighter and more compact to carry around while hunting, and something with way less recoil so I could actually target practice.  I shot more deer with that last fall than I've shot with my shotgun over the last 10 years.  It was insane at how much quicker it was to bring up to aim and acquire a target than my shotguns.

My favorite gun to shoot. Just make sure you know what you're getting into ammo wise. Rollin your own is really the only option.

Ordered some new brass for my .338 Lapua. Running about 30% more these days. Pretty close to $3.50/case. Luckily they last a long time.

Rolling your own is THE ONLY way to fly.
