I think that's the ONLY way this scenario could possibly play out.

There is NO WAY he is voluntarily letting go of his last couple of months of power.
He is too much of a narcissist for that, and he won't give Kamala the satisfaction of sitting in the big chair without winning it.

Well there's the flaw in your idea.

Article II, Section 2, Clause 2 is very explicit. (The Appointments Clause)

"...and he [the President] shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls, Judges of the supreme Court, and all other Officers of the United States..."

This would require a Constitutional Amendment to change, so good luck with that.
I'm not saying it is impossible, just highly unlikely. 

Here's the thing... ONLY THE LEFT says you HAVE to be a Constitutional Scholar in order to read it. Just like the early Catholic Clergy decided only the Clergy can read The Bible... which is complete hogwash. Much like The Bible is for everyone to read, so is The US Constitution. Do not take my statement as any sort of equivalency. The Bible stands alone.
