Quote from: Smit on November 06, 2024, 12:39 PMIt's pretty clear Trump has the primitive, crude, rude, white supremacist, misogynistic, xenophobic, homophobic, etc people wrapped up. Those people are his base. The Trump cult. They worship their orange god. You know who I'm talking about.

That's a pretty large portion of people in this country. Larger than I used to think it was. But not enough to win.

So you want reasonable, rational responses, but you lead with this?
This is the kind of UNreasonable IRrational rhetoric that is part of the problem.

Quote from: Smit on November 06, 2024, 12:39 PMSo that means a lot of reasonable, rational Americans voted for Trump. I'm wondering what policies were the Democrats pushing that made moderate, reasonable, rational Americans think they would be better off voting for Trump than Harris?

One of the big ones was the border.
It is an absolute fact that Biden rescinded all of Trump's executive orders that effectively closed the border to ILLEGAL immigrants, i.e., those who chose to enter the country by any means other than going through an established Port-of-Entry, followed our laws and procedures, and were willing to be vetted before being allowed in.

Those were policy decisions, made by both Trump and Biden as POTUS.
It's quite obvious that the majority of Americans favor Trump's approach.

Sad to say, both Presidents acted by executive order on this issue because Congress wouldn't do their fucking job, but that's a different subject.

And please don't start with the ridiculous 'Border Security' bill that everyone knew was doomed from the start because it was packed with 'extra' funding for Ukraine and Israel to the tune of $85 billion and $16 billion respectively, and have NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with border security.
That's the oldest trick in the book in Washington, to pack a bill with pork then criticize the other guys for not passing it, and both D's and R's are just as guilty of using the same tactic.

But anyway, the pre-election and exit polling data shows that the border was one very big issue for voters in this election.

Clearly immigration was a big part of it. The right wing media beat that drum for the last 4 years and it was effective.

Your claim on the border bill is false but that worked out for Trump too. I'm not going to bother looking up where Trump admitted telling Repugs to kill the bill because I know you'll ignore it and it doesn't matter anymore.

I probably wouldn't have lead with those particular comments in this case but I do have to ask a question.

Does everyone who reads that first paragraph think he means that *all*, or even a *majority* of Trump voters are those things?

I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

Here is what Trump actually said... note; it was a horrible bill that would still let thousands of illegals through everyday. And it was loaded with billions of blank check money to Ukraine.

Quote"Only a fool, or a Radical Left Democrat, would vote for this horrendous Border Bill, which only gives Shutdown Authority after 5000 Encounters a day, when we already have the right to CLOSE THE BORDER NOW, which must be done," Trump wrote on Truth Social of the legislation, which was crafted in part by conservative Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.).

"This Bill is a great gift to the Democrats, and a Death Wish for The Republican Party. It takes the HORRIBLE JOB the Democrats have done on Immigration and the Border, absolves them, and puts it all squarely on the shoulders of Republicans," Trump continued. "Don't be STUPID!!! We need a separate Border and Immigration bill. It should not be tied to foreign aid in any way, shape or form!"

Don't go interjecting facts into the conversation, Doug.

It was strongly implied...

If you want to start a rational conversation it's probably best not to start by bashing

I'm going from bad memory, but didn't they pull Ukraine support from the bill and put it up for a vote again?

No, after they couldn't agree, they removed the border part from the bill and advanced the Ukraine aid.

that's how I took it. I watched the coverage from when Judge Barrett was nominated and people on the left called her racist even though she had children that are black. My adopted daughter, Lucinda, is mixed race. It hit me square in the gut when they accused her of it. It was as though they were accusing me of racism as well. They can all go to Hell as far as I'm concerned.

This is a quote I'm reading.

QuoteThe border security bill, S.4361, received fewer votes Thursday as a standalone bill than it had as part of the larger foreign aid package in February, when it failed on a 49-50 procedural vote. Sixty votes are needed to advance bills in the Senate.

I assume they separated the two but the Ukraine aid ended up passing while the border bill was shot down?

A link to the bill.

Nope.
The Dems achieved their goal of being able to say the Reps killed a Border Security bill.
I said it earlier that this is the oldest trick in the political playbook, and it was / is used by both parties.

Just like the 'convicted felon' label they slapped on Trump.
That case will 100% be overturned on appeal, but they don't care about that.
It gave them another buzzword to use in a Presidential campaign, so it served its purpose.

btw...just as a side point, that pesky old Constitution lists TWO and ONLY two qualifications for POTUS:
-35 years of age.
-Natural born American citizen.

So even though the buzzword 'convicted felon' was a nice little touch, being an actual convicted felon, real or otherwise, is NOT a Constitutional disqualification to be POTUS.

I think I made it pretty clear that I don't think all of the people who voted for Trump have any or a majority of those traits.

That was kinda the point.
