Quote from: YoDoug on December 30, 2024, 09:13 AMLOL, my wife's dad is local has been in eastern TN for 20+ years. He says it is all of the rich upper east coasters that retire, sell their house NY/NJ/etc, and buy whatever they want in TN that is driving up the cost of living. They also don't get TN culture and come down looking and acting like typical upper east coast A-holes.
People from Kommieforniastan are doing the same thing. Sell their 1,000sq. foot hut for $600k or more, and move to a red state and either pay cash, over asking price or both. Driving the locals crazy and out in the process.

Firstly, my Kommieforniastan house was 3,517 sq. ft.... NOT 1,000 and it was on a 7,400sq. ft. lot....

Secondly, had we not needed to move in 2014 from our Chino Hills house, that was about 5 years from being paid off, we would have DEFINITELY been one of those people that locals love to hate. We would have been able to pay cash for the modest 4,700 sq. foot house on a 1/3 of an acre lot we now occupy. Alas, that was not meant to be. Que sera, sera... So at 53, I started another mortgage in another state... trying to enjoy whatever time I have left on this earth in a red state where freedom is a sweet aroma instead of the stench of tyrannical shit-hole that Democrats have turned California into.

Quote from: YoDoug on December 30, 2024, 09:10 AMI'd be ok with Rocket city. My wife wanted to be closer to her dad in eastern TN, but I'm sure she would do fine in Alabama. Yes, BS in Electronic Engineering with 25 years of CNC machining and 10 years of robotics/factory automation experience.

Hit me up sometime if you'd like a list of employers I'd consider 'good' or 'great'.
Also, you have the option of a Gov job with that degree.

Sometimes it's handy to live in a state that no one wants to move to on purpose.

Why so big? I'm sure it's a gorgeous home, but gimme 1500-2000 and I'm happy.
Less to maintain and clean.

100%. Our current house is 3000 sq ft, 5 bedroom on a 1/3 acre lot. Our next house will probably be a 1500 sq ft 3 bedroom, and hopefully on at least 2 acres, preferably more. The older I get the less house and more land I want.

If it were just me and my wife that's 100% where we would have landed.
In our house is my wife, my youngest son, my 2nd son, his wife, their 2 kids and I. My wife also wanted a craft room and I needed an office so that's where the house size landed. It wasn't the intent.

Sometimes I have a pity party with myself thinking about how much money I have spent on grown family. Then I take a breath and realize how lucky I am to be in a position to help. My grandkids don't live in a slum. My family all drive safe vehicles, etc. And I do it with a profession that I still like after 38 years.
