I got sick the second day I was there. I never got to have any pizza.

Apparently the pizza is different in every region so you might like it in one area and hate it in another.

My g/f has tried it in 3 areas now so I'll have her give me the critique when she gets back. I do know that one of the places she did NOT like it at all.  lol. She ate the crust and threw the rest away.

I got one of those fancy wood burning pizza ovens for Christmas.  It's pretty awesome 800 deg pizza done in <1 min

Glad to hear you had a great trip, aside from the flu :(

Rome is a great city to visit. A lot of history. The Colisseum and the Forum are really interesting.

I totally agree about Naples. It is a sh**hole, and thankfully was just a cruise boat stop for us when we were there. It allowed us to take the bus to Pompeii and Amalfi. The Amalfi coast is stunning.

We enjoyed Venice and Florence much more. Florence especially.

The trip only cost me what I spent after I got there.  My g/f family paid for the flights and room and board. Her daughter and son in law lived in Europe for two years and go back once a year to visit friends.

And, I didn't puke.

My daughter and son-in-law went to Italy for a 20th Anniversary second honeymoon trip last year and they loved it.
They mostly went the Rome, Venice, Florence route, but they also visited a few small towns off the beaten path.

My son-in-law has a cousin there that he never met in person, so they got together for dinner.

He is a full-time Pastor, and this year his church leaders have decided to give him a 7-week paid sabbatical this coming summer for the purpose of resting, recharging, and spending some quality time with his wife and kids away from the church and all of his responsibilities there.

They decided to go back to Italy for a month this time, and bringing the kids as well.
They will be staying in a small town somewhere in between the bigger tourist cities where everything can be reached by train.
The grandkids (14, 12, and 8 ) are super excited about going and can't wait to get there.

They asked the Mrs. and I to keep their dog at our house for them while they are away, so we are glad we could help them take what will probably be the trip of a lifetime for them as a family.   8)

Thanks for the trip report!

The time away from the tourist spots really sounds nice. I'd like to see that and enjoy the culture (and food) there.

I'd hate the crowds but if I didn't see the historical stuff I'd sure feel like it was a missed opportunity.

Same here.
That's why I love the way our kids are going to do their trip.
Staying in a smallish town, but still able to see all the most famous sights.

My son-in-law told me they can go almost anywhere for like a $7-$10 train ride, spend the day, then take the train back to their nice little Air B&B for the night.

btw, fun fact:

My son-in-law found that Air B&B which is a fully furnished 3 bedroom apartment in a smaller city for less than they would have paid per night in any hotel in the big touristy cities.

He found out that the longer your stay, the better price you can get.
Makes sense from the owner's perspective if they can rent it out for a whole month at a time.
