It's not just the houses.

Drive a Block and you are in a different city.

Baldwin Park , La Puente. it is endless.

Part of what you don't understand is Los Angeles keeps growing.

Incorporating More cities and property.

L.A. used to be only a city. It ate more and More.

Now it is larger then Maine. Yes bigger than some states.
