With the newest crop of PS subscriptions, I have stopped paying altogether. It wasn't worth it to me, and I really hated that I was paying to not own something in the end. Most games you need to pay to play online against other people. Yes, you'll get a library of games to pick from if you subscribe too, but it's up to you if that's worth it, as you'll need to keep paying to play them. Might be good to try a few out though, since you're coming back to gaming after a hiatus.

There are some free to play: 'War Thunder' and 'Call of Duty: Warzone' come to mind. You can get those for free, and play online. There are options to buy stuff in the game, but you don't have to unless you want to. For a causal here and there, between those you can get your military fix for a few hours at a time and see if you like it.

Doom Eternal is on PS5, very good Doom game.

Red Dead Redemption 2, an Western themed RPG, one of the best games ever made.

Also in RPG, if you've never played The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, that's a winner.

Overcooked 2: 1-4 players cooperative, everyone works together to cook food. Nice that there is nothing hazardous for young eyes and ears, and everyone is always working together. I have had hours of fun with this one, great to throw on at a party and everyone is shouting out orders and working toward a goal.

If the kids are already into Minecraft, then that will soak up their free time, but some parents aren't keen on the little ones playing it.

If any of the kids, or you, like racing/driving games Gran Turismo 7 is the flagship on the PS5, and there's always a new Need for Speed game out each year, so the older ones are cheaper to get.

I'm surprised anybody would post something like this on the message forum.

Let's get back to partisan politics now!

Thanks, that's some good info.

I'm trying to create kid accounts so the kids can play online now. My oldest grand daughter wants to play Fortnite and I guess it's only online. I've been getting an error when finalizing the account. It's a pretty helpful error message, something like "something went wrong."  :realmad:

I'm playing Witcher 3 now, it was one of the top rated RPGs out there and it's pretty fun. I've seen "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" is also rated very high in just about all the lists of best RPGs so maybe after Witcher 3. :)

Overcooked 2 is also high on the lists for multi player games. I think that will be my next purchase. It sounds like it would be fun for young and old. :)

I'd rather not pay a subscription price. I'm not really interested in competing online, at least right now. The bottom tier plan is $80 a year, which isn't bad if you use it. I'm not going to do it for a while at least, until I get a better feel for the whole gaming world.

Been awhile since I've played, but Fortnite requires an Epic Games account as well to play, since their servers handle the online play. Could be an issue with that, or if kiddie's Epic account is already linked to another playstaion, could be the issue. Hard to tell 100% without being hands on, but might set you in the right direction.

My family is big into the Witcher, my dad blew through the books after loving the game/show.

Also got a recommendation for the kids from my younger siblings, a series called 'Kingdom Hearts'. It's an all Disney characters RPG, has been around for awhile and my sister really got into games/computers from playing that when she was younger.

Our wii bowling high scorer is still great gramma. I don't think anyone else will put up a 290.

I had a WII until a few years ago. It was fun but I tossed it while cleaning house after we did our remodel.

It was pretty cool back in the day though. We had a lot of fun with the sports game edition.
