Of course it is and it's a good thing. Kids these days just wanna be "tik tok famous" or a "content creator" and not actually contribute to society. Most of them don't want to work and look to get rich from donations.

I think Australia is banning social media for anyone under 16 iirc.

I wonder what that ban looks like. A lot of Video games have a social media aspect to them. Which could just be a simple work around for any kid wanting do it anyway. I just don't see how they effectively do it. Not that I disagree with it.

The BIG problem with this, is to do it, EVERYONE needs a digital iD so over 16's can use it....
Remembering, this is what "they" want for everyone....digital iD....

True, because parenting is something that doesn't happen to a lot of kids these days.
Give em a gaming console or a phone and that's the babysitter/parent.

I've seen it everywhere since having a kid.

Do you know how many toddlers own ipads? It's a staggering majority of the other kids we know. Mine will never have a mobile device until 100% necessary for schooling, linked to negative correlations of brain growth and cognitive capacities. Each additional screen available for use piles on the risk factor. The blinking stops, mouth opens, doesn't speak, it's spooky to watch how immediate the change is when the magic box comes out to placate the brats.

Add alcohol, and that's what the parents do. What's the problem?

I get that you're kinda trolling here, But Adults have fully developed Minds and Bodies.  We can choose to get the food that nutritious or garbage

I'll admit that my daughter probably spends too much time on her smartphone.  Currently she has straight A's and practices volleyball 4 days a week.  She minds about as good as you can expect a 12yo, so she get some lee-way.

Grades drop, smartphone/youtube drop as well.

Very true, but what do we do with the millions of parents who make the same horrible choices (diet, exercise habits, entertainment choices, etc) for their children as they do for themselves?

Many many kids see their parents do nothing in their free time but look at a screen of some sort. When we were kids (sorry about any age assumptions) that screen was a CRT. Today, it's a phone/tablet/laptop/etc.

NOT advocating for government intervention or control, BTW. I just wish we could do better.

When I was a kid, there were no screens
My father was in the oil business and we lived in places where there was no TV.
I will admit when we came back it the states I was fascinated by the idiot box.
My biggest memory of those days was coming home to the latest fads.
One summer we came home and all the girls in my grandfather's neighborhood were parading
around with Beatles posters. I was thinking these girls are out of there minds...
a smarter gcode jr would have joined the parade  ::)
another time, Batman was the latest craze and I remember say, "this show is the lamest POS ever"
and all the kids treated me like a heretic  :D

I couldn't agree more.
We are so thankful that our daughter and her husband keep a careful watch on the amount of screen time our grandkids get.

They are currently 14, 12, and 8.

My daughter has been home schooling them from day one, and from the time they each learned to read on their own, she has had them each spend a MINIMUM of 1/2 hour per day reading a book, (Yes, an actual real paper book!), and then she would ask them to give her a brief summary of what they read that day, and what they liked or didn't like about what they read.

This was done to both spark a conversation about the material, and to make sure the child wasn't just going through the motions or just skimming, but actually reading, comprehending, and even forming their own opinions.

The result of that disciplined behavior at an early age is that all 3 kids reached the point where they actually enjoy reading and no longer need to be told to do it, and in fact now they sometimes each spend several hours a day reading just for fun.

They do use iPads for their schoolwork, and the oldest granddaughter (14) was just recently entrusted with one of Mom's old iPhones for her own use.
It doesn't have internet, but she can call or text with friends, and Mom or Dad have the passcode so they can monitor her activity.
I know that seems harsh, or too restrictive to some, but I would rather see them err on the side of caution.

They are also not just sitting around the house all day.
They all participate in outdoor family activities like hiking and bike riding together, and they have all participated in soccer, t-ball / softball, and our middle granddaughter is taking snowboarding lessons this winter.
