I can't imagine any number of politicians getting on board with a reduction or removal of income tax in any way.

The fence sitting is becoming less common because the differences between the left and right especially culturally are SO stark. BITD (prior to LBJ) the left and right's differences were a little more nuanced.

Throw in the 24-7 news cycle, information innundation (all by design IMHO) and it's easy to see why we are where we are.
