It seems to me neither has any intrinsic value except what people seem to believe it has

Great question. In 'our' case, if we were so lucky to have invested in bitcoin or and/or other cryptos...our value from them is when we convert (or cash out) some for...U.S. dollars.

I'm sure I've missed a few, but what assets represent true value? Absolute true value? Gold, silver, and land. Maybe throw in rare paintings in there.

If our dollar crashes, our stocks are worthless. Bonds worthless. Only gold, silver, and land hold value.

and the lack of any central oversight is a big issue...

I've explored it and just can't bring myself to put money into it

I invested in cryptos 3 years ago. $500 invested. lol (not sure why I even bothered).

Some say lack of central oversight is a big positive.

Bitcoin really started rocketing higher after PayPal enabled cryptocurrencies as a funding source for purchases. PayPal offers Bitcoin, Etherum (by far the 2nd biggest crypto), Litecoin (who knows, but I bought around 250 bucks worth 3 years ago lol), and Bitcoin Cash.

Coinbase.com now offers a ton of different cryptos. When I last logged on it a couple years ago, it offered Bitcoin, Etherum, Bitcoin Cash, and Litecoin. So, a few weeks ago I log in and they have a TON of them. Too many to count..

I've been bouncing in and out of Blackberry catching about %10-15 gains each time - while there was a big jump on Amazon deal news, the actual products haven't hit the news yet and I think the stock has room to go. Jumped back in at 6.50

The parachute is they still have tangible value in their patents and would be a desirable acquisition target for any of the big cell phone players

Always like input. Looks interesting. I noticed years ago it was trading at around $77 a share. Early last year (2020), under a buck a share. Hit $7 midyear then went down again. Starting to move higher now again.

$3 a share.... Hmmm. Might consider a 1,000 shares for a short term trade.

My GM shares starting to rip higher. Good news coming out. They are aggressively doing more electric vehicle development and the markets like. P/E ratio 23. Compared to most stocks in their category, that is DIRT cheap. Bought another 100 shares Tuesday. Tesla market cap 10X higher. We all know how much that stock soared higher this past year. I rec GM...

This turned out to be a good call - This stock has lagged for long stretches in the past so I wouldn't get excited about $10.50 right now, but there's room to go.

They just sold a bunch of Patents to Huwawei, but they have always had barrels of cash so if they were doing that I expect it was to leverage some liquidity for a move.

Sandcik has been doing well after the VC aquisition.
(Vericut not venture capital).
Companies diversifying into unrelated fields is usually the kiss of death.
Opinions?

There will only be 21 million Bitcoins whereas fiat currency supply will always go up and will always fail.
Bitcoin will only be a store of value, not a means of transactions.
