A CRJ700 that had departed from Wichita Kansas with 60 passengers and 4 crew was hit by a Black Hawk helicopter.

MSNBC said it left Wichita, California. Ass hats

That sucks. Falling out of the sky is a tough way to go. You know it all the way down.  :(

Going to be interesting to see where the fault lies.

Wichita, California... TOTAL asshats.

Sad stuff. Sounding like the Blackhawk wasn't paying attention. Tower asked if they had the CRJ in sight, but didn't get a response.

The death toll is not sounding good right now.

Of all the airports I've flown in and out of, Reagan is the one that I am always shocked by the close proximity of other aircraft.

I imagine this is related to all the areas you can't fly over DC.

Yup, the only flight path is over the river out to like 5 miles around the capital. And there is a 60 mile flight restriction radius that you can't just fly into it, need clearance, have to pass a course, background checked, and approved long beforehand.

I hope that is what happened. When I first heard about it, I worried that it was something like the New Orleans attack.

Controller told both aircraft to "maintain visual separation", AKA now it's your responsibility to not crash into each other. Also did give clearance for the jet to land with a helo on or near the glide slope. Also on the recording the "... did you see that?!" he was totally unaware that they would be sharing XYZ coordinates. I'm not in the tower, and I know the workload is HIGH, but that's a pretty big mistake. I hope it will bring up the issue of controllers being overworked and how few there are across the US.

CRJ700 is nose up on descent, so it may not have even seen the chopper at night. And you wouldn't expect one to be there, especially when ATC gave you the green light.

They were saying last night that jet was using IFR; I don't know if that turned out to be true or not.

What a terrible loss. My heart goes out to those affected.

There's so many aircraft in the air, avoiding accidents must be very difficult.

Listening back, it's probably the helicopter that was being referenced for VFR instructions. Commercial traffic has to run IFR, I think, which i why it didn't make sense in the first place. And military has their own rules and procedures, as we know. Reports that the helo pilot was wearing nightvision goggles at the time too, so no peripheral vision, and that the plane they 'saw' was on approach to a different runway. So they were confused, or never looked for the CRJ at all.

A sad loss of life, for certain. Also very glad it seems to be a true accident, with no VIPs on the chopper it removes the risk of this being an assassination.

Looking at an aviation site I read often there were a couple of other contributions;
Normal approach had a 15 knot crosswind with gusts to 25 knots, so pilot most likely request the other runway. Approach for that runway puts them in the path of normal military rotorcraft traininng traffic.

At fist glance, ATC is gonna take the hit for this one.

Yup.

Sometimes it just comes down to 'shit happens'.

Pilot error, ATC error, or a little of both.

Sad.
