It's pretty clear they (U.S. - Ukraine) should have had many meetings to get a lot of things straightened out and agreed upon before having a newscast.

I agree, however, last time Trump had a discussion over the phone with Zelensky, he was impeached.
I think they chose to meet publicly this time so there would be ZERO confusion as to who said what.

I also think once Zelensky said he was not going to sign the mineral deal, the meeting should have ended there.
It seemed to me that he is the one who kept pressing the security considerations even after Trump clearly stated that those things would be clarified as the process moved forward.
