DNA reveals Jack the Ripper's identity

https://www.newsnationnow.com/crime/jack-the-ripper-identity-revealed-dna/

QuoteHistorian Russell Edwards says he has identified Jack the Ripper as Aaron Kosminski through a DNA match of a shawl found at the scene of one of his murders.
Who is the man purported to be?

Kosminski was a Polish immigrant who came to Whitechapel, England, in 1881 alongside his brother. He became a barber once in the British capitol.

Edwards told the "Today Show Australia" that he came to purchase the shawl in 2007 after it was purported to be at the scene of the murder of Catherine Eddowes.

Kosminski, who was aged 23 at the time of the murders, has long been considered a suspect. He had schizophrenia and was in a mental asylum at the time of his death in 1919.

Thanks to Kosminski's oldest brother's great-great-granddaughter, the revelation was made after they provided a DNA sample.

Interesting.

This new DNA technology has become a game changer for solving cold cases.
Genetic genealogy is how they caught the Golden State Killer, who went undetected for decades until his DNA finally caught up with him.

I just started listening to a podcast called 'DNA:ID' that documents many cases which have recently been solved after decades of investigation with no resolution.

Anyone who committed violent sexual assaults and murders in the past and got away with it should definitely be looking over their shoulder today.

Even in the 70s when DNA wasn't a thing for ID purposes, they still kept samples from the crime scene. That's one way they convicted BTK. That and he was a dumass.

Yup.
Rader (BTK) was too arrogant for his own good.

Not so much DNA but computer forensics was his downfall.
Dumazz sent a letter to the media on a floppy disk that had metadata from his church's computer.  :wallbash:

Yeah, stupidity. He looked at it as a big game and was offended when the COPS lied to him.

Rader: How come you lied to me?
Landwehr: Because I was trying to catch you.

DNA was how they tied him to all of the murders. They got a warrant to get dna from a pap smear his daughter had done. (She didn't know about it.) When they compared the dna from the old case files to this it let them know that he, indeed, was the BTK killer.

I think there are quite a few procedural hurdles because it is a multi-jurisdictional case.

The murders took place in Idaho, and the alleged killer then had to be tracked to and extradited from PA.
I think the defense team are raising many questions about the how and why their guy was singled out, long before they will even challenge any of the physical evidence.

AFAIK the only DNA that places him at the scene is a very small bit of 'touch DNA' on the snap of a knife sheath left at the scene by the killer.
The defense will try to shred that as well by challenging the admissibility of it before the trial even starts, and there was a huge change of venue argument that also took time to sort out.

There was also some last-minute 'new' DNA evidence that could potentially point to someone other than Brian Kohberger being the killer, so there were many motions filed over that.

Lots going on behind the scenes, but his trial is due to start in August, so we will find out then if a jury will be convinced that he is the killer.
