Trump Takes the Dumbest Tariff Plunge
He says the 25% levies on Mexico and Canada will begin Tuesday. Stocks fall.

"We've courted Mr. Trump's ire by calling the Mexico and Canada levies the "dumbest" in history, and we may have understated the point. Mr. Trump is whacking friends, not adversaries. His taxes will hit every cross-border transaction, and the North American vehicle market is so interconnected that some cars cross a border as many as eight times as they're assembled.

Mr. Trump also objected when we reported an analysis by the Anderson Economic Group that the 25% tariff will raise the cost of a full-sized SUV assembled in North America by $9,000 and a pickup truck by $8,000. Is this how the new Republican Party plans on helping working-class voters?"

Well that's the whole point.

Yesterday we learned that a Taiwanese semiconductor company will be investing $100 billion to build a plant in Texas, along with Honda and Apple also investing huge sums into the American economy, all of which seems to have sprung up from a desire to avoid the tariffs.

TSMC was already planning on investing more in to US MFG (chips act). I don't think it was 100 billion. They've also said that construction costs in the US are at least 4 times higher and it would cost 50% more to manufacture the chips in the US. That's going to lead to higher priced products anyway.

I assume that it's going to be the same for vehicles. People can barely afford to buy new vehicles these days as it is.

The only upside is job creation and that's only an upside if the jobs pay well enough to offset the additional cost of products and that doesn't help the people who already can't afford it.

It's too early to speculate but I remember the analysis on cost per job created the last time we went through this and it wasn't good.

There is a reason that half of the people in the US buy Chinese crap. They can't afford anything else. I haven't heard any solutions for that particular problem. Other than yanking medical care for people who already can't afford it.

Still better than seeing those chips and cars made in Mexico.
And these are generally jobs that pay an above average wage, so I would rather see American workers get those jobs, even if there are growing pains associated with them.

I sat right there and heard the guy say they were investing 100 billion on chip factories in Arizona after already investing 65 billion. Well over a trillion dollars Trump has gotten from companies to build in America.

I think you may have misunderstood my comment. I'm saying the same thing you are worded differently. I didn't know how much they had committed to previously.

That may be true for SOME things, but the reason is people are too cheap to buy quality stuff, so they end up buying cheap chinese shit.

It's not affordability, it's greed.

So people living paycheck to paycheck, trying to scrape enough to together to save for their retirement, struggling to pay their medical bills, buy cheap shit because they're greedy?  :headscratch:

From the vehicles on semis going down the roads I don't think overpaying for new vehicles is a problem. I can't imagine buying a $100,000 truck.

Nice cherry picking there.

I can't afford a $50,000 truck and that's not far off from the average price right now. Or should I say, was?

Do you have any idea what percent of US citizens are in debt? Or are unable to save enough for their retirement?

Must be because they're greedy?
