1 in 25 adult males in the US will get colorectal cancer before the age of 65. On this forum the majority of activity is from about 25 of us. That means statistically one of us will develop colorectal cancer. However the risk can be greatly change by modifiable diet and lifestyle factors.

What were colorectal cancer rates like 50, 75, 100, 1000 years ago?

What did meat and veggie intake look like 50, 75, 100, 1000 years ago?

We humans have been eating red meat since the days of wooly mammoths and giant cave bears. Did 1 in 25 cavemen die from colorectal cancer? How about the plains Indians who survived eons on bison meat? I kinda doubt it.

While I'm sure you can point us to a study that shows deceased colorectal cancer rates in vegans, maybe those lower rates aren't caused by the fact they aren't consuming meat, but that they aren't consuming the things that are in our meat today.

Processed foods are big risk factor for cancers as well. I'm not saying the entire fault of cancer is red meat, but it  does increase the risk.

I have already had it, when I was 52, so I took one for the team. You're welcome.  :)
In two weeks I go for another colonoscopy so they can harvest this year's crop of polyps.

Breathing just became illegal in California because of cancer risks.

Here's Johnny!

My question is what has changed in the farming of beef cattle since the early 1900's (antibiotics, hormones etc)?

Nitrates are linked to Colon cancer, so cold cuts (processed meat) are loaded with Nitrates.

The linked article says it is from the iron in red meat, not just processed red meat.

1. Modern analysis of archeological sites is trending towards more gatherer diet than hunter.

2. Until a few centuries ago the average life expectancy was 40 years. They died from all kinds of infections, starvation, injuries, etc. If a lifetime of eating red meat in 2025 develops increased risk of cancer by the age of 65 it wouldn't really matter to people that only lived to 40.

Here's Johnny!

I believe there has always been link to colon cancer and red meat. Countries that don't enjoy the Delicacy of red meat have lower rates of colon cancer.

Another factor for women and gay men is anal sex.
