I'd wager that they will see a decent decline in sales once the masses realize the safety differences.

Maybe they are trying to standardize with one machine configuration they can sell in both the US and European markets.
Machines sold in Europe are so locked down they are almost unusable.
We bought a second Okuma MU1000-H in 2022. The machine we bought in 2013 had an OSP200 control, the 2022 model has an OSP300. The control itself is much nicer, but the machine is much more difficult to run.
It is locked down like a bank vault with safety features.

I'm already seeing some safety things they added to this machine, which still has the P300 control that I don't like. I'm hoping some of it can be disabled in the parameters, once we get it going. They added a dead man switch to the pulse handle. you have to squeeze 2 buttons with your left hand while operating the pulse handle with your right. I'm still wondering how to touch off a tool that doesn't lend itself well to the tool setter (like a counterbore with a pilot) seems like you'd need a third hand for that.

Far and away the DUMBEST safety thing a mfg can put on their machines.
Next to having to press a button when the cycle is done to open the fucking door! WTF is that about?

I'd love to see someone from OSHA setup one of these machines since they know what's safe for us and what isn't. I'm willing to bet they've never touched a cnc in their lives.

It is not just safety stuff. They wanted to consolidate controls so they moved a bunch of stuff that used to have hard keys to touchscreen menus.

We got one of the first U3000 in the US with the P500. They have had to do about 6 software updates. It had major problems in the beginning. One of the software updates that the dist tried to upload bricked the control. They had to put Japanese engineers on a flight overnight to come fix it. Luckily the machine was not too busy as far as work load. Currently it is running great. They have fixed the issues and the machine is crazy accurate. It is just different enough that it is hard to throw less experienced operators on it.

LOL, I figured out if I hold the pendent upside down I can hold the deadmans switch with my pinky and turn the dial with my thumb keeping my other hand free.

Yeah, the Deadman switch is poor.
On the plus side, CE spec drawbar prox switches are set it and forget it now. They just trigger end of strokes

That is an improvement. In all of our other Okuma lathes I added laser dist sensors on the back of the cylinders with a PLC/HMI to set positions without having to remove covers. About $2k in hardware and about a day to install, but major time savor when you change jaws multiple times a day like we do.

We don't have the P500,but a buddy of mine does and I went to his shop to look at it.
He showed me all of the safety changes.
Eff that.

They finally got rid of that stupid open/close chuck jaw prox system they've had forever?

Same switches, different function. No long need to tweak them for every setup.

Well my instructions this morning are to work on layout space for another M560. I guess we are probably going to order one.

🤣🍿
Would be interesting to know who came up with it first. FANUC is 500i-A. Is Okuma just P500?

Earliest documentation I have is dated July 2024.
