Quote from: Smit on April 06, 2025, 08:58 AMPersonally I don't believe they think about it enough for it to be truly intentional, so in an ignorant kind of way, I think it's not intentional. But the "elite" Repugs have little love for the parasite class so who knows?

He's been talking about it for 30 years.

Quote from: neurosis on April 06, 2025, 07:31 AMHow many popular consumer products aren't made in America at all and not likely to be any time soon? Things like cell phones and televisions.
IPhones cost $10 to make in China and sell for $1100. They might have margin to make them here... Or maybe eat the $3.40 tariff.

Oh they're all intended consequences.
Of course "they" know what "they" are doing.
Very foolish to think otherwise

Quote from: gcode on April 06, 2025, 09:08 AMDo you remember TV brands like Zenith, RCA, Magnavox, and GE?
Quote from: gcode on April 06, 2025, 09:08 AMEven as late an 1976/1077 when I was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, the base PX had amazing deals on stereo components.
The same items were 60% high in the stores out in town. The Japanese consumers were forcibly subsidizing the destruction of the American electronics industry.

I do remember those brands.  I don't remember the history behind how they disappeared. I was 6 years old in 1976.
I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

They had a big plant in Evansville and moved to Mexico. Few years later Whirlpool closed and moved to Mexico. You'd think someone would want to stop that.

But if you're the owners, you move to get your cheaper labour and maximise your profits....

So do you guys think that people purchase cheap consumer goods because they're cheap (or as jeff said, greedy), or because they can't afford anything else?

Are the goods made in America better?

Long ago, "made in Japan" meant cheap shit. Over time it became quality stuff.

Remember when GM (and probably others) made cars with limited lifetimes (planned obsolence) so you'd have to buy a new car after a relatively short time?

People started buying better quality Japanese cars.

Imports forced American companies to do better.

Remember when tariffs were out on imported cars to make American cars cheaper so American manufacturers (or cars dealers) raised prices to match?

Del.

Remember when foreign car companies started moving many of their manufacturing plants to the USA ?

Foreign car manufacturers make more vehicles here than the big 3 combined.

I remember when I lived with one set of grandparent's, my grandpa used to call anything made in Japan, Japanese junk.

Yes in Georgetown close to Lexington. Huge plant. I went on a tour there.

Also a Toyota plant about 40 miles from here in Princeton Indiana. It's also huge with multiple other facilities supplying it.
