If they're going subscription based, then what purpose does maintenance serve? Will that go away if someone goes with the subscription model?

Local independent dealers is what made Mastercam what it is today.
The further removed we get from that model, the worse it's going to get.

No, once you are subscription based, you are a hostage.
If you don't pay maintenance, you still have working software. You just can't upgrade.
If you quit paying, or can't pay your subscription, you've got nothing. You're back to PencilCam.
From the numbers I've seen, an annual subscription is slightly cheaper that annual maintenance but not enough
to make it attractive.

I suspect there will only be 4 maybe 5 dealers in the US when all is said and done. With Mastercam buying up the smaller ones along with their technical staff and sales staff.

I don't know anything not stated in the pressers. It just has that vibe on it.

We shall see.

When you are on subscription, you will always have access to the latest release.

When we were looking at powermill before we bought mastercam here one of the selling points was you would get your posts and support for free with subscription.

I didn't fully 100% believe it but they stated that due to their size and number of subscribers they could support that. that part I did beleive but when I was doing the demo time period it took almost two weeks to get an answer and fix for a post for one of our machines I was test cutting on.

Wonder if that kind of thing would come with subscription or if you will still pay for modifications to a post? I could see if you needed to something special or complex but right now our VAR supports us very well.

a subscription can be good for new market entry ( new customers ) as you buy a 10K subscription ( no maintenance ) and let it expire then renew in three years to get caught back up with major releases.  honestly, how much has been different in the last three years that would be a deal breaker.  pro rate the subscription over 3 years and it comes in just under what maintenance would be.  The ones really pissed off are the owners who spent 25k on a perpetual license and not feel screwed.  ask me how I know ( with NX )

I was talking to a couple of MLCCAD guys recently. They were told by the higher ups "Sandvik will buy this over my dead body".

That talk is fine & everything....but it is being talked about. I wouldn't be surprised to see all dealers go the way of dinosaurs. Hopefully it takes a long while tho.

That number will be zero

LMAO even their News release page doesn't work right...

The only PR today was hers, the others were all last week if you look at the main page but when readying hers, it shows all others dated today  :D

Someone should request a bug number for the PR page  :D

LOL, then they will just Tri-Mech them and cancel their contract to resell...they won't have a choice. Sell or lose it

Tri-Mech bought Macdac & Compumachine and 3 years later Mastercam chose not to renew their contract...

Tri-Mech now reps Solidcam

The old relationships that built not only Mastercam but many companies no longer exists.

It's not personal, it's business

I've offered a "rent to buy scheme" for a certain software in the past. Pay a subscription, slightly more than the stand subscription over three years. Basicially subscription with maintenance, and at the end of the three years the license goes from subscription to perpetual. A good way for a customer to ease themselves into a software product.

Out of the five or so companies it was offered to, only one took it up. But they were happy.
