I know that 60 minutes isn't well received in these parts. :D

I thought this was interesting. Maybe a little too optimistic?

Artificial intelligence could end disease, lead to "radical abundance," Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis says

I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

Full disclosure-I haven't watched this yet.

However, every time I hear phrases like "radical abundance" I cringe, not because it sounds like a bad thing on the face of it, but because I suspect that the *real* reason the collective "we" can't enjoy "radical abundance" is because there's always some asshole who has just gotta have all of the marbles. It's not enough to just have lotsa marbles, or more marbles than you can spend for the rest of your natural life-nope, gotta have more more more.

Wasn't automation going to deliver us to a world of leisure, too? Anybody here enjoying a life of leisure because of all of this magic we've created for ourselves? (Or is leisure just synonymous with "unemployed", just with enough $$ to take the sting out of it?).

If the world grows enough to feed everyone, why do people starve?

Yes, I'm hopeful, but not optimistic. It's sorta like the joke: "in theory, theory and practice are the same; in practice, they're not."

I remember back in school (9 or 10 years old) the teacher saying to us all "by year 2000 there will be computers everywhere that will help do our jobs so we will all be able to work far less hours and have more leisure.

#1 She was already on a cushty number, with 12 weeks paid holiday a year.
#2 I thought blimey, i'll be 33 then and nearly dead!
#3 She never said who would pay for our extra leisure time
#4 Typical example of school indoctrination....

Radical abundance comes from humility and gratitude. I don't know how AI could create that.

Very true beej.
But in this created word of commercialism, time = money, and part time hours = part time money.
And the owners of the money system, who own the food system and energy system, keep raising prices....

They wouldn't call the Gulf of Mexico "Gulf of America"?

I just read over the weekend that their top producer, Bill Owens, resigned ahead of a Paramount merger that has to be approved by the Trump administration. I say, good luck to them.

Seeing how the leading causes of death are mostly chronic illnesses that are largely diet and lifestyle induced, I don't see how AI is going to fix that.

We're going to be gaslit even more - what you've said is nothing to do with illness. pHarma is here to help.

Hamplanet body positivism will likely skew the earth's rotation by increasing the wobble along the axis - as the northern hemisphere balloons in self-congratulatory cake, and the south has less and less to eat. Over a few millennia we'll drift into Mars' orbit, taking out the SpaceX colonies, thus releasing all of humanity from it's mortal coil.

60 Minutes has been dead to me since Rathergate,
They could have denounced Rather and his fabricated story once it became clear it was fraudulent.
They did not, they stood by Rather on his hill of lies and died with him on that hill.

I didn't pay much attention to this while it was going on but I do vaguely remember it. I had a lot going on in my life at the time.

Didn't several people get fired over this?

They'll make another pill that makes you immune to heart disease, but you'll shit blood every 10 minutes for the rest of your life all while losing the ability to walk because your toes fell off.

They stuck  to their guns till Bush won the election, then pretended to be shocked and outraged.
I believe a few people did move on. I don't recall if they were fired or left voluntarily.

I now know a lot more about this story than I ever cared to.  lol. It's a lot more complicated than I would have thought.

Dan Rather resigned over the story.

Mary Mapes was responsible for the story. She and a few others responsible for the paper trail and contacts leading to the documents that couldn't be authenticated, were all fired from CBS. Apparently, the source for the documents eventually admitted to lying about their authenticity?

Rather went on air and admitted that they couldn't authenticate them, but still decided to resign over the story.

All of the people involved say they believed that the story was true.
