Most American Catholics don't pay much attention to the edicts of the Catholic church.

Take abortions for example

Church doctrine is adamant and unwavering in it's opposition to abortion yet 70% of American Catholics
believe in unrestricted abortion rights. 

Alright, I can buy that. I guess a way to look at it is people want to be spiritual while understanding the people leading their church (or religion) are just people and don't actually speak for their god of choice.
