A Shared American Soul

QuoteAlberta isn't Quebec. It's not even Vancouver. Alberta is culturally and economically tied to the American West. Drive from Calgary to Montana, and the only thing that changes is the gas prices and the gun laws.

Albertans hunt, ranch, drill, and pray like their counterparts in Texas, Wyoming, or North Dakota. They believe in private property, free enterprise, and the God who made both. If Alberta were already a U.S. state, it would fit right in — and be far better governed than it is now.

Mr Martin makes a good argument for this

Yeah... well reasoned and thought out arguments for it for sure.

I'm in favor of it. 😁

When I moved to Canada, I assumed it would be just like living here, but it wasn't. It was quite different. I understand why Alberta might consider it but I don't think the rest of the provinces would be for it.

I'm 1995 Quebec voted to secede from Canada. Much like the 2020 US election the vote counters had different ideas

Quebec wanted to secede but still be financed by Canada. Like a kid who wants to move out but still have mom and dad pay rent. And they definitely do not want to become part of the U.S., especially the French Canadians. California is to conservative for them, unless it's changed a lot since I lived there.

Of all the provinces, Alberta is most like us.

Fuck those French wannabes in Quebec. The rest of the nation should have sent those bastards packing... fudge. :coffee:

What was the difference?

I was in Montreal; it was more like Europe, especially the architecture. Prices in the grocery stores used a comma where we would use a decimal. I think that's only in the French speaking part.
One guy asked me why, when people come to the US from other countries, they are proud to be Americans. I didn't quite know how to respond.
Someone else, when finding out I came from the U.S. to work in Canada, asked "couldn't they find a Canadian to do that" to which I replied, "apparently not".
Your electric bill is your hydro bill. Someone else said they knew I was American when I used the word "mall'. Apparently, they just call them shopping centers.

The guy we paid to teach us French was a Quebecois socialist. He taught French to new immigrants. He once said in a conversation "it's not a freedom but it's better for the collective".
I was always very aware that I was the alien.
I was always glad to get home, as I'm sure Canadians are after they visit here.

Keep in mind, this was in 98 and 99.

Maybe if I would have been in Toronto or Vancouver it would have seemed more like home.
